Is Dryer Vent Cleaning Different by Province? Here's What Canadian Code Actually Says
A lot of dryer vent safety advice online is written as if the rules are the same everywhere. They're not. Canada's National Building Code sets a baseline, but individual provinces layer on their own specific requirements — and the differences aren't minor.
Here are two real examples.
Quebec: A Hard Cap on Duct Length
The Quebec Construction Code takes a more specific approach than most provinces. It requires rigid, smooth duct — and it caps the total duct length at 25 feet, including the length added by elbows and bends.
That's a firm number, not a general guideline. A run that might be considered acceptable in one province could be over the legal limit in Quebec once every bend in the path is accounted for. If you're a homeowner in Quebec, or a technician working there, that 25-foot ceiling is worth knowing specifically — not just "shorter is better."
Alberta: A Clearance Requirement That Changed
Alberta's code specifies a minimum clearance between a dryer vent termination point and other openings, like air intakes. Under the 2020 harmonized code update, that clearance requirement increased from 900 mm (about 35 inches) to 1800 mm (about 71 inches) — effectively doubling the required distance.
That's a meaningful jump. A vent installation that met code before that update may not meet current code today, even if nothing about the vent itself has changed.
Why This Matters Beyond Just Two Examples
These are just two provinces. The broader point is that dryer vent code in Canada isn't one uniform national rulebook — it's the National Building Code plus real, binding provincial variation on top of it. A standard built around a single generic set of rules (especially one adapted from outside Canada) can't account for details like Quebec's specific length cap or Alberta's specific clearance change.
This is exactly why a Canadian-code-grounded certification matters: a technician trained only on general best practices might not know that a specific number — 25 feet, 1800 mm — is the actual legal requirement in a specific province, not just a suggestion.
